Prenelan Subrayen finished with five wickets to help South Africa A (SA ‘A’) beat West Indies A by an innings and 88 runs in the first four-day match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia on Wednesday.
Together with Tristan Luus, the pair claimed all four wickets needed on the final day to put the tourists 1-0 up in the two-match series.
Off-break bowler Subrayen, who starred with bat and ball on the previous day, ended with excellent figures of five for 82 in 30 overs, while seamer Luus grabbed four for 86.
The hosts were bowled out for 272, meaning their last four wickets managed just 21 on the final morning as they were easily rolled over by the visitors.
West Indies had started off the day in a fix on 251 for six, though Ronaldo Alimohamed (40) was digging in with.
But he lacked support at the other end as new man Khary Pierre fell for a 19-ball duck when he was caught by Subrayen off the bowling of Luus three runs into the day.
Johann Layne (12) was next in, but fell to spinner Subrayen just under three overs later, before Oshane Thomas fell to the same bowler for an eight-ball duck.
That left Alimohamed fighting by himself until he was last man out, bowled by Luus, sealing a fine win for the South Africans.
Day 3
On Day 3, Prenelan Subrayen starred with bat and ball to further strengthen the position of South Africa A (SA ‘A’) over West Indies A after the third day of the first four-day match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia on Tuesday.
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins captain first hit an unbeaten half-century that took his team up to 600 for seven, where they declared with a 360-run lead, before claiming three for 71 with his spin, which left the hosts at 251 for six at stumps.
It meant they still trailed the tourists by 109 with the final day to come on Wednesday.
After playing the better cricket for the first half of the game, the South Africans continued to assert their dominance in the match thanks in the main to Subrayen.
He began the day batting unbeaten on 31 and having strung together 97 for the sixth wicket with Rivaldo Moonsamy (68 off 104 balls, 8 fours, 1 six).
But the visitors lost their wicketkeeper first up as he fell to Ronaldo Alimohamed (2/88). However, Subrayen kept going, first reaching a half-century and then taking his side to 600 alongside Tristan Luus (15*). The 31-year-old ended unbeaten on 64 off 77 balls (7 fours, 1 six).
With a big innings deficit between the teams, the hosts fell into further trouble when John Campbell was caught and bowled by Tshepo Moreki (1/53) for a four-ball duck.
However, the innings was then given a boost thanks to an 87-run second-wicket stand between Mikyle Louis (34) and Kevlon Anderson (52 off 101 balls, 5 fours).
Subrayen was the man to break the stand with his off-breaks, first removing the former and then the latter to reduce West Indies to 108 for three.
Kavem Hodge (38), Alick Athanaze (49) and captain Tevin Imlach (31) then all got strong starts, but failed to kick on – as the South African bowlers continued to chip away.
Luus took out the first two of those three players to fall with his seam, while Subrayen, who sent down 27 overs in total, accounted for the key wicket of the skipper with just under three overs of the day remaining.
Alimohamed (34*) at the other end was holding up the visitors’ charge, though they still ended the day in pole position to push for a result.
Day 2:
A blistering maiden double century by Marques Ackerman put South Africa A (SA ‘A’) in complete control after the second day of the first four-day match against West Indies A at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia on Monday.
The left-hander belted 209 off just 170 balls, thumping 32 fours and two sixes, as the tourists progressed from their overnight 68 without loss to 546 for six.
There were also half-centuries from Jordan Hermann (52 off 85 balls, 8 fours, 1 six), Jason Smith (56 off 82 balls, 9 fours) and Rivaldo Moonsamy (68* off 103 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) – all of which allowed the visitors to add 478 on the day to put themselves 306 runs ahead at the halfway stage.
It was a totally satisfying day for the South Africans, though it did not start in the best way after the unbroken overnight opening stand of 68 broke without the addition of a run.
Lesego Senokwane (28) was the man to fall, dismissed from the ninth ball of the day by Oshane Thomas (1/92).
That brought captain Ackerman to the middle and he was at the heart of his sides’ dominance from there.
Together with Hermann, he put on 63 for the second wicket, before the former fell to Ronaldo Alimohamed (1/72).
The skipper, whose previous best first-class score was 140, was then part of two century stands, putting his team in complete control.
He added 126 with Smith, taking their side to 257 for two, and then a flowing 155 with Sinethemba Qeshile (48) as the South Africans moved to 412 for three.
Ojay Shields (2/90) removed Smith and Ackerman, with Qeshile falling in between to Johann Layne (1/89).
Another quick wicket by Khary Pierre (1/105) – Lhuan-dre Pretorius out for 23 – did open the door slightly for the hosts at 455 for six.
However, there was no let-up, with Moonsamy then picking up the baton.
The SA wicketkeeper added an unbroken 91 for the sixth wicket with Prenelan Subrayen (31*) leaving their side in complete control at the close.
Day 1:
An excellent five-wicket haul by Okuhle Cele lead a strong opening day performance by South Africa A (SA ‘A’) helping them take control over West Indies A in the first four-day match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia on Sunday.
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins seamer claimed five for 43 as the tourists capitalised on winning the toss and bowling first by dismissing the hosts for 240.
Lesego Senokwane (28) and Jordan Hermann (31) then put on 68 in the final hour to help the away side reach the close in a sound position – 172 behind with all 10 wickets in hand.
After winning the one-day series, the South Africans continued to enjoy a productive tour in the first of two four-day games.
Cele lead the way and there was good support from the others too, Tshepo Moreki picking up three for 63.
But the hosts did make a good start thanks to John Campbell (33) and Mikyle Louis (57) with the pair putting on 79 for the opening wicket.
After Jason Smith (1/37) made the initial break brought by getting rid of Campbell, Cele landed the hosts with a triple blow.
He got rid of Kevlon Anderson (3), Kavem Hodge (0) and Louis to leave the score on 100 for four.
Alick Athanaze (5) and Ronaldo Alimohamed (8) followed shortly after to leave the home side in deeper trouble on 119 for six.
Captain Tevin Imlach (61) and Khary Pierre (44) rebuilt well with a 77-run seventh-wicket partnership that took the total to 196 for six.
But the SA bowlers hit back well from there to bowl out the home team in 63.4 overs.
Senokwane and Hermann then negotiated the last 15 overs of the day to keep their side in a strong position at stumps.
The final match of the tour begins at the same venue on Sunday.
