Anneke Bosch starred with a well-measured half-century in the opening game of the 3rd edition of the Women’s Super League in the clash between the Thistles and the Starlights, writes Emily Norris.

Six Gun Grill Newlands played host to the 3rd edition of the Women’s Super League. The opening game of the tournament saw The Thistles face The Starlights.

Overcast conditions seemed to favour the bowlers and hence made scoring runs difficult for both sides.

There were two WBBL Proteas on show, in Lizelle Lee and Shabnim Ismail, however, it was a Proteas squad member, Anneke Bosch, who performed.

She was part of the recent HPC (High-Performance Centre) squad forming part of the camp that ran from the 23rd to the 27th November 2020.

The Thistles posted a score of 100 runs, with Bosch top-scoring with 52 of those, off 43 balls. She scored the majority of her runs straight down the ground and on the offside, hitting nine 4s.

Prior to lockdown and leading up to the tournament, the North-West player found decent form, scoring 95 against the KZN Women in Durban on the 25th January 2020 and 59 against the Northerns in Potchefstroom on the 15th March 2020.

Bosch then carried on with this form scoring a 50 in the opening WSL game of 2020, until she perished off the bowling of Masabata Klaas, trying to clear the long-on boundary – Lara Goodall took the catch.

Masabata Klaas’ bowling figures of 3/15 off her 4 overs and a cameo 33 from 17-year-old Khushi Mistry were the only stand-out performances for the Starlights, however, this wasn’t enough to get them over the line.

The Thistles won by 11 runs.
