“What made us proud is the way the girls responded to different challenges to make sure they get the job done,” said Momentum Proteas Head Coach, Hilton Moreeng ahead of South Africa’s World Cup semi-final clash against England.

The Proteas were put under pressure in virtually every game in the tournament, and often faced conditions that they were unaccustomed to.
Moreeng was pleased to witness the adaptability of the team in these challenging circumstances.
“The players had to make sure they adapt as quickly as they can. At times, the game was running away from us and we had to pull it back whether it was with the bat or with the ball.”
Moreeng revealed the dressing room has always been calm in the face of high-pressure moments through the course of the tournament, and there was a sense of confidence derived from the fact that the team had responded well to pressure numerous times in the past.
A key facet of Moreeng’s coaching philosophy has been to equip his players to make decisions on the field.
“Once you start working with people to become independent thinkers, they don’t depend on you as a coach or whoever they work with, it makes it easier for them to take decisions in the middle. Cricket is a decision-making game. Under pressure, you have to make critical decisions.”
Reflecting on heartbreak from the semi-final in the previous World Cup, Moreeng said, “In sport no two days are alike. If you’re given the opportunity again, you can respond better.”
Moreeng heaped praise on Laura Wolvaardt, who has been one of South Africa’s star performers in this World Cup.
“If you look at how Laura Wolvaardt goes, such a young age, such a good head on these young shoulders. The experience that she is showing. When you, as a coach, look at this, you’re very proud of what you see in front of you.”
