The Eight Provinces in CSA’s Division One are set for an exciting 2026/27 season, with plenty of changes to the structure of the competitions expected. Now that all the squads have been released, CFM will take you through some of the highlights of the movers and shakers for the new season.

Stability seems to be the key for the Lions, Western Province, North West Dragons, Boland, the Warriors and the Dolphins. The newly promoted Knights and the Titans have all seen some big-name signings and departures ahead of the new season. Let’s look by province at how they are expected to shape up ahead of the new season.

Boland

Boland have retained most of the squad that saw them punch above their weight in nearly all formats last season. The T20 Challenge finalists have made three key signings, with Neil Brand and Lizaad Williams joining from the Titans, and Ruan Terblanche returning from South Western Districts. They have lost Grant Roelofsen and Keith Dudgeon to the Dolphins. Veterans Pieter Malan and Aviwe Mgijima are not contracted this season. It is likely that Blayde Capell and Neil Brand will be the opening pair, with the outstanding Gavin Kaplan set to be at 3 or 4. Ruan Terblanche could fill one of those positions too, with captain Clyde Reeves-Fortuin and Jhedli van Briesies completing the wicketkeeper/batting positions. 

All-rounders Lehan Botha, Ethan Cunningham and the iceman Ferisco Adams add punch with the bat and useful medium pace, with the ever-improving Nathan Jacobs set to please the Paarl faithful. Lizaad Williams comes home to the Boland and will be teaming up with the reliable Glenton Stuurman and left-armer Akhona Mnyaka as the fast-bowling spearheads. There is no Shaun von Berg this season, so the spin bowling department will be led by Imraan Manack, who will be ably supported by Siya Mahima, Neil Brand and newcomer Yves Kamanzi.

Boland have proven their worth in Division 1, and as one of the smaller provinces will once again be looking for some giant-killing form, particularly on home turf.

Contracted players

Ferisco Adams, Jevano Baron, Lehan Botha, Neil Brand, Blayde Capell, Ethan Cunningham, Clyde Reeves-Fortuin, Nathan Jacobs, Gavin Kaplan, Siyabonga Mahima, Imraan Manack, Akhona Mnyaka, Glenton Stuurman, Ruan Terblanche, Jhedli van Briesies and Lizaad Williams, while Yves Kamanzi has been included on a high performance contract.

Dolphins

The Dolphins have retained the majority of last season’s squad, with key departures being Tshepang Dithole and Eathan Bosch to the Titans. These gaps will be filled by Grant Roelofsen, Josh Richards and Keith Dudgeon respectively. The exciting young wicketkeeper/batter Ntando Zuma has made the trip down the N3 from the Tuskers, as has his team-mate, spinning all-rounder Sean Gilson.

Three young players, spinner Aryan Gopalan and batters Blake Simpson and Slade van Staden have moved to Division 2, where they will be likely to get more senior level experience.

Whilst the loss of Bosch and Dithole are blows, their replacements are highly capable, with Dudgeon currently enjoying a fruitful season with county side Kent. The balance of the squad looks excellent, and there are several players of national interest (PONI’s) in the team. Keshav Maharaj and Ottniel Baartman are enjoying some Major League Cricket currently, and if available during the season will add to a side brimming with talent.

The batting boasts the likes of the Dolphins and SA “A”’s captain Marques Ackerman, with Richards, Roelofsen, Protea David Miller, Bryce Parsons, Khaya Zondo, Hanu Viljoen, Romashan Pillay, Semal Pillay, Jason Smith, the explosive Gomolemo Phiri and Ntando Zuma.

The fast-bowling ranks are swelled by Dudgeon, with Baartman, Smith, Nqobani Mokoena, Okuhle Cele, Tristan Luus, Bayanda Majola, Andile Simelane, Tim Saulez and Bandile Mbatha in the squad. This is probably the most exciting young bowling talent ever assembled in one province, and it should be fascinating to see how they perform.

The spin attack will be led by the experienced Prenelan Subrayen, with Parsons, Gilson and Maharaj (when available). 

Expect a better season from Quinton Friend’s men, who last time out were crippled by national call-ups during the season.

Ottniel Baartman and Keshav Maharaj are the Cricket South Africa-contracted players.

Knights

The newly promoted Knights have made some significant changes, with the marquee signing being PONI Lesego Senokwane from the Titans. Jono Bird, George van Heerden and Wian Ruthven will move from WP, SWD and Border respectively to add to the batting arsenal. Experienced leg-spinner Junaid Dawood joins from the Titans, with fast bowlers Ntando Soni and Nico van Zyl coming from the Warriors and Border. All-rounder Emmanuel Motswiri makes the trip south from Limpopo.

The core of the team that swept to all 3 Division 2 trophies remains the same, with captain Dane Piedt once again able to call on the experience of Malusi Siboto, Isaac Dikgale, Gihahn Cloete and Jacques Snyman.

Youngsters Ross Boast and Ntando Soni will probably lead the fast-bowling line with the excellent Tiaan van Vuuren (fresh from a maiden ten-wicket haul for SA “A” against the English Lions), with van Zyl, Motswiri and Siboto in support. Piedt will lead the spin-it-to-win-it team, together with Dawood, Mbongi Mhlanga and the occasional spin of Bird and Seth Fledermaus.

The batting line-up looks excellent, with last season’s Division 2 leading scorer Cloete leading a blend of youth and experience. Dikgale, Cloete, van Heerden, Bird, Ruben Maree, Ruan Haasbroek, Cole Abrahams and Fledermaus are all highly capable batters, with the all-round ability of van Vuuren and Siboto adding extra value.

The Knights will be looking to make a solid start to the new 2-year cycle and have the squad to trouble some of the bigger provinces.

Lions

The 4 Day Series champions have made few changes to their outstanding squad from last season. Gerald Coetzee and Quinton de Kock have moved from the Titans, with Beyers Swanepoel and Evan Jones making the move the other way over the Jukskei River. Joshua Richards has swapped the game reserve for the open ocean with his move to the Dolphins. Former HS Noordheuwel pupil Tiaan Brits earns a contract as he returns to his home province from Limpopo. 

The balance of this squad is excellent even without their nationally contracted players. The batting line-up is littered with Proteas and PONI’s, with captain Dom Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, de Kock, Wandile Makwetu, Rassie van der Dussen, Zubayr Hamza, Connor Esterhuizen, Mitch van Buuren and Tiaan Brits a formidable proposition for any attack. Add all-rounders Delano Potgieter, Bjorn Fortuin and Richard Seletswane and the team bats all the way down to number 8 or 9. There is also depth in the development system at the Lions, as we have not even mentioned players like Morteza and Armaan Manack, Jason Rowles, Neil Timmers and Tahseen Hanslo, none of whom are mentioned in the Lions Press release.

The fast-bowling attack will be led by Coetzee, Lutho Sipamla, Codi Yusuf, Potgieter and the developing Siya Plaatjie. Even if Wiaan Mulder, Kwena Maphaka and Kagiso Rabada aren’t available at all, this is a fearsome attack. The spin department is also stacked with talent, led by the dependable Fortuin, it features the leg-spin of Nqaba Peter, together with Reeza and Seletswane’s handy off-breaks.  

A balanced squad under the tutelage of Russell Domingo and his star-studded coaching staff, the Lions will be contenders once again in all competitions.

Contracted players

Tiaan Brits, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Connor Esterhuizen, Bjorn Fortuin, Zubayr Hamza, Reeza Hendricks, Dominic Hendricks, Wandile Makwetu, Nqaba Peter, Siya Plaatjie, Delano Potgieter, Richard Seletswane, Lutho Sipamla, Mitchell van Buuren, Rassie van der Dussen and Codi Yusuf. Temba Bavuma, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Kagiso Rabada and Ryan Rickelton are the Cricket South Africa-contracted players.

North West Dragons

It has been a quiet recruitment season for the men from Potchefstroom, with stability being the key to achievement in the 2026/27 season.

Daryn Dupavillon joins from the Tuskers, while the WP pair of Mthi Nabe and Juan James make the trip North from the Cape. Juan’s younger brother and fellow SA u19 player Paul will join him in the Dragons’ Den. Janneman Malan departs after 2 seasons, bound for Oudtshoorn, while Thobile Hlatuka moves to Mpumalanga.

The Dragons can challenge any team in Division 1, with their batting line-up headlined by PONI’s Rubin Hermann and all-rounder Dian Forrester. Captain Wihan Lubbe is excellent and needs consistent batting support from Lesiba Ngoepe, Meeka-Eel Prince, Diego Rosier, Juan James, Ludwich Schuld and Raynard van Tonder, of which they are capable.

It is a team stacked with all-rounders, and Onke Nyaku had an outstanding season for the Dragons in 2025/26, particularly with the ball. Ruan de Swardt is a key player for them with the ball and in the lower middle-order, and his contributions will again be critical this season. Forrester, the James brothers and Lubbe complete a formidable all-rounder team.

The fast-bowling attack is strengthened with Dupavillon and Nabe, with de Swardt, Forrester, Alfred Mothoa, Nealan van Heerden, Lutendo Tsanwani and the tearaway youngster Callie Fryer completing the complement. Spin is also exceptionally well-covered, headlined by left-armer Jade de Klerk and leg-break bowler Caleb Seleka, with Wihan Lubbe and Juan James likely to play a role with their off-spin.

It is expected that the Dragons will continue to perform across all competitions, with the white-ball trophies the most likely to find a way to the trophy cabinet in 2026/27.

Titans

Perhaps the biggest news for the new season is at the Titans, where the One Day Cup champions have made some significant changes. On the batting side Rivash Gobind lost Lesego Senokwane to the Knights and Neil Brand to Boland. He has managed to find not one but two excellent replacements, with Tshepang Dithole and Sinethemba Qeshile joining the light blues. They have a plethora of wicketkeeper/batters, as they have retained Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Rivaldo Moonsamy, Keegan Lion-Cachet and Lethabo Phahlamohlaka. Keegan Petersen will anchor the middle order, and if Aiden Markram and Dewald Brevis are available, this is a powerhouse batting line-up. Specifically for the white ball formats, the addition of the big-hitting Evan Jones from the Lions will be welcome, and his partnership with Donovan Ferreira will be interesting to see.

The loss of Gerald Coetzee, Sibs Makhanya, Merrick Brett and Lizaad Williams meant that the fast-bowling area needed to be supplemented, and bringing in Eathan Bosch, Beyers Swanepoel and left-armer Aphiwe Mnyanda seems like excellent business. Last season saw the coming-of-age of Duan Jansen and we can expect him to play a big role this season too. When you have players of the quality of Dayyaan Galiem, Junior Dala, Andile Phehlukwayo and the ever-improving Janco Smit still in your ranks, there are plenty of options in the fast-bowling discipline. Add in Proteas speedsters Corbin Bosch, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi at any stage in the season and it will be a terrifying prospect for any opposition.  

The spin department will have the services of Simon Harmer when not on national duty. He will be joined by retainees Tsepo Ndwandwa, veteran Roelof van der Merwe and Schalk Engelbrecht, with the exciting young talents of Jarren Bacher and Esosa Aihevba a bonus. 

The Titans suffered when their national players and what we know now as players of national interest (PONI’s) were not available, so covering their bases here will make them serious contenders in every format. 

There have also been several changes in the high performance area, where Steve Stolk, GJ Maree and Merrick Brett all head to Division 2, where they will hopefully get some serious game-time. The retention of SA u19 batter Jorich van Schalkwyk is great for his development, with Divan de Villiers also a good batting prospect. It will be interesting to see if young all-rounder Kagiso Ngwenya will get to play more than Colts cricket this season. 

Overall, a very balanced and powerful squad, which may see them challenging for more silverware in 2026/27.

Warriors

The T20 Challenge Champions and 4 Day Series finalists enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season, bringing welcome silverware to St. George’s Park. They have gone for stability, as coach Robin Peterson continues to combine exciting young talent with tried-and-trusted experience.

Old hands Sibs Makhanya, Beuran Hendricks and Tladi Bokako move to Nelson Mandela Bay from the Titans, WP and Border. Batter Andile Mokgakane makes the move from the Tuskers. PONI Sinethemba Qeshile and exciting left-armer Aphiwe Mnyanda have both moved to the Titans, while youngster Ntando Soni departs to the Knights after one season with the Gqeberha outfit.

The batting line-up has a very solid look to it, with last season being the breakthrough that everyone thought Matthew de Villiers was capable of. Even without Proteas Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs and Senuran Muthusamy, he will be supported by Modiri Litheko, PONI Jordan Hermann, Mo Manack, JP King, Jean du Plessis, Patrick Kruger and Mokgakane. 

The pacers are led by former Proteas Duanne Olivier and Hendricks, with the express pace of Gideon Peters always a handful. Last season’s leading bowler in the 4 Day series, Matthew Boast (43 wickets at 19.55), will once again be looking to fill his boots. They will be supported by Kruger, Jordan Morris, Kerwin Mungroo, Wesley Bedja, Makhanya, CJ King, Ethan Frosler and Bokako. The spin attack is headlined by Muthusamy, with Thomas Kaber’s left-arm wrist spin and the off-breaks of JP King and Jason Raubenheimer. 

The Warriors have a settled look to their squad, with options for both white-ball and red-ball excellence. Expect that they will once again be right up there challenging for honours this season.

Western Province

Incoming… no, there are no new signings for WP for the 2026/27 season, but the boys in blue have lost Jono Bird to the Knights, Juan and Paul James and Mthi Nabe to the Dragons, Abdallah Bayoumy to Limpopo, Beuran Hendricks to the Warriors and Liyema Waqu to the Tuskers.

There are first-time full contracts to some of last season’s outstanding youngsters, with Josh Breed, Raeeq Daniels, Oliver Whitehead and Mbulelo Dube all earning that distinction. PONI Nandré Burger returns to a provincial contract, while young batters Kashief Joseph and Bongi Mfunelwa earn high performance contracts.

On the batting front, there is a familiar look to the line-up, with Eddie Moore expected to play a more important role this season. He is joined by local hero wicketkeeper/batter Daniel Smith, who had an excellent 2025/26, with Josh van Heerden, Jiveshen Pillay, Valentine Kitime, Joseph and Mfunelwa completing the batting specialists. If available, Proteas David Bedingham, Tony de Zorzi and Kyle Verreynne add some serious firepower.

The loss of pace veterans Beuran Hendricks and Mthi Nabe will give the opportunity for Dube, Daniels and Whitehead to shine, under the watchful eye of Proteas Burger, Mihlali Mpongwana, Dane Paterson and Tshepo Moreki. 

Western Province’s spin department will rely on the outstanding left-arm pairing of George Linde and Kyle Simmonds, with the leg-spin of Josh Breed for support. Breed came to the fore last season, particularly in the white ball formats, and coach Rory Kleinveldt will be looking for further improvement this season.

All-rounders Mpongwana, Whitehead and Linde will have important roles to play with the ball and in the lower-middle order, with Mpongwana looking for a better season in 2026/27.

Western Province will be reliant on their experienced campaigners to shepherd the young guns through the season. It will be a season for consolidation, and they could surprise with a title challenge in any one of the 3 competitions.
