Wiaan Mulder’s 3/1 topped off an excellent bowling display by South Africa, as they dismissed the Windies for 149 on Day 2 of the 2nd Test.

The West Indies have been bowled out for 149 – exactly half of South Africa’s total – at the close of Day 2.

Earlier today, the Proteas put together a solid first-innings score, thanks to another well-compiled counterattack from Quinton de Kock (96). It was down to the bowlers to help back up the score, and Kagiso Rabada got started right from the get-go, claiming the wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite.

Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje got among the wickets and reduced the home team to 30/3 before tea. Shai Hope was building a determined rearguard in the final session, but when he chopped onto his stumps off Ngidi, the situation began to rapidly worsen.

Jermaine Blackwood took the responsibility of accompanying the tail and top-scored for the Windies with a respectable 49. And going to the bowling, Wiaan Mulder was the pick of the Proteas bowlers, notwithstanding the fact that he was introduced to the attack fairly late in the innings, after 46 overs. He successfully sent back Josh da Silva, Kemar Roach, and Jayden Seales, leaving the Windies 9 down for 145, and Keshav Maharaj picked up the final wicket of Blackwood in the very next over.

From a Proteas perspective, it’s refreshing to see a well-rounded team effort with the ball, with every bowler picking up at least one wicket. The lead is 149, and the focus for tomorrow’s play will be extending that lead to an insurmountable margin, while the Windies will be eyeing quick wickets to limit the damage and stay in contention.

SA 298 (de Kock 96, Elgar 77 – Mayers 3/28)
WI 149 (Blackwood 49, Hope 42 – Mulder 3/1)
