South Africa made a determined comeback after a rocky first session, but the progress was once again kept in check following Kyle Verreynne’s dismissal just before the tea break.

Dean Elgar continued to lead from the front with his compact defence and took advantage of the available scoring opportunities. Kyle Verreynne helped establish a platform in just his second Test innings and added 87 runs with the skipper.

However, the reintroduction of the Windies pace ace Shannon Gabriel brought the game back in the balance. Verreynne attempted a pull shot but ended up edging it to the keeper. Quinton de Kock arrived in a similar situation as the previous game.

South Africa have made a determined comeback after a rocky first session, but the progress was once again kept in check following Kyle Verreynne’s dismissal just before the tea break.

However, the reintroduction of the Windies pace ace Shannon Gabriel brought the game back in the balance. Verreynne attempted a pull shot, but ended up edging it to the keeper.

Quinton de Kock arrived at a similar situation compared to the previous game and produced another solid knock with measured aggression when required.

As Elgar’s rearguard pressed on, De Kock kept the score going at a steady rate. They added 79 runs between them, and there was another twist when medium-pacer Kyle Mayers bowled the skipper with a looping inswinger after consistently beating his outside edge.

With Elgar’s dogged resistance coming to an end, the Windies have a shot at exposing the Proteas tail on Day 2. As of now, De Kock and Mulder have seen the visitors through the remainder of the day’s play – bad light forced an early finish into the extra half hour, with a total of 82 overs bowled.

The surface still has a fair amount of movement and bounce, something that the seamers from both sides will relish.

SA 217/5 (Elgar 77 (237), De Kock 59* (103) – Gabriel 2/47)
