Zubayr Hamza’s exquisite maiden T20 century helped the Western Province Blitz clinch a crucial victory against the Lions in the CSA Provincial T20 Cup.
On Thursday evening, the day before Western Province Blitz’ opening clash against the Lions in the T20 Knock Out tournament, assistant coach Rory Kleinveldt spoke glowingly about Zubayr Hamza.
Kleinveldt said Hamza’s game improved by “leaps and bounds” in recent times.
Hamza, in addition to other players in the Western Province setup, have elevated their white-ball skills because “they have opened their minds up to different things in the format.”
Kleinveldt continued, “They understand that you have to let go of the fear of failure to want to succeed at this game. Play with freedom and just go and express yourself. Show people what you have, show people your talents.”
This was evident as Hamza smashed 106 off 63 balls (10 fours, 6 sixes) at a strike rate of 168.25.
His efforts helped WP Blitz post a winning total of 197/7 in their 20 overs, despite an excellent return from Malusi Siboto who took 4/30 in his 4 overs.
The Lions got close with their chase, thanks to cameos throughout the team – Ryan Rickleton top-scoring with 53 off 31 balls.
The WP Blitz constricted the Lions to 195/6, to complete a nail-biting 2-run win.
