“When we were bad, we were really bad,” said Proteas Head Coach, Mark Boucher, after South Africa lost the third and series-deciding ODI to Pakistan at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Chasing 321 in 50 overs, the Proteas fell short by 28 runs. Playing a series final without five of South Africa’s first-choice players, Boucher was impressed with the way Jaaneman Malan, Kyle Verreyne, and Keshav Maharaj stepped up with impressive performances. “Kyle, Jaaneman, Kesh had fantastic games,” said Boucher.

Frustrated after losing another series in home conditions, Boucher said South Africa needs to start “winning the big moments.” For instance, “in the last two overs, we gave away 40 runs. If we give 25, we’re giving ourselves a chance,” Boucher explained.

Boucher also emphasized the importance of fielding well, which was lacking throughout this series. He wants his players to “be more desperate in the field.”

With the T20 series against Pakistan coming up in two days, South Africa are likely to be without captain, Temba Bavuma, and senior batsman, Rassie van der Dussen, who have suffered serious hamstring and quadriceps injuries, respectively. However, Boucher said, “It’s a young squad, so the guys are desperate for opportunities.”
