Momentum Proteas top-order batter Laura Wolvaardt says her team needs to stay “calm and execute” when they face Bangladesh in the final Group A fixture of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Newlands on Tuesday.

The Proteas, who will enter the match sitting third in the group after losing two games and winning one against New Zealand, need a win to book themselves a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Addressing the media on Monday ahead of the crucial game, Wolvaardt said the team needed to stick to its processes and execute better to win.

“A lot of us feel fortunate to be in this position and to be able to still have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals,” she said.

“It’s a vital game for us tomorrow; we’re just trying to stay focused on our processes The last game didn’t go as we liked, but we’re just going to stick to our plans, and hopefully, we can execute them better tomorrow.”

The 23-year-old Cape Town born has uncharacteristically misfired in this tournament, scoring only a total of 50 runs in her three innings. She admitted to the frustrations of the scoring drought but remains hopeful that she will deliver when her team needs her the most.

“It’s never nice not to make runs, especially at a home tournament,” said Wolvaardt.

“It’s supposed to be a very special time for me, so not making runs is quite frustrating, but I think at the end of the day, I’m still hitting the ball pretty well in the nets.”

“I just need to stay calm and trust the runs will come when they need to.”

Without a doubt, South Africa will need the crowd as a 12th man if they are to beat Bangladesh on Tuesday, and with supporters showing up in numbers in all three respective cities, Wolvaardt believes that a packed Newlands on Tuesday would be a welcomed gesture by the Proteas.

“The crowds have been amazing, and all of them have been very different, which is cool.”

“I think tomorrow there will be a lot of people again, and it’s my home ground at Newlands, plus it’s an important game, so it’s going to be important to have the home crowd behind us,” she concluded.

Play between South Africa and Bangladesh in the final Group A fixture begins at 19:00 on Tuesday, 21 February.
