Ravi Reddy and Ongama Gcwabe have picked two ODI XI’s one from the 1991-2003 era and the other from the 2004-2020 era. Which XI would win in a head-to-head?
Ravi’s XI (1991-2003)
The lockdown period has positioned me alongside a number of Cricket Fanatic “journos” to come up with a playing XI to compete in a clash.
Truth be told, I completely underestimated this task! This was a monumental effort, which required me to read old stats and watch some archive footage.
Fortunately, I just so happened to come from an online sports quiz, which featured some complex cricket questions.
This led me to the realization that I have been looking at this from the wrong perspective.
It’s important to note that each writer was provided with a specific time period to develop their respective squads.
It was based on the era’s of cricket that each writer has witnessed or experienced. This is the only method to pick an honest side based on the opinion of the writer.
To this end, low and behold the squad of the Heavy Roller.
1. Herschelle Gibbs
2. Gary Kirsten
3. Jacques Kallis
4. Darryl Cullinan
5. Hansie Cronje (c)
6. Jonty Rhodes
7. Lance Klusener
8. Mark Boucher (wk)
9. Shaun Pollock
10. Allan Donald
11. Makhaya Ntini
Ongama’s XI (2004-2020)
Here is some insight into my selection.
Faf du Plessis is a dynamic batter in that he can attack if he’s the in-batter.
If he’s batting with either Quinny or Amla who’re already in then he can take his time and play a more supportive role and take a more explosive approach towards the end of the innings.
AB and Colin bring the X-factor into the batting lineup. They’re men of any occasion, they’re calm under pressure and very useful in the field as well.
JP brings calm into the batting lineup and also provides a sixth bowling option which is crucial in ODI cricket.
We all know what KG, Dale, Andile and Immy bring into the side, perhaps Theron’s inclusion is one that needs explaining.
Theron in his pick brings pace, can hit a long ball and has that deadly yorker which we rarely see these days.
1. Hashim Amla
2. Quinton de Kock (wk)
3. Faf du Plessis (c)
4. AB de Villiers
5. Colin Ingram
6. JP Duminy
7. Andile Phehlukwayo
8. Rusty Theron
9. Kagiso Rabada
10. Dale Steyn
11. Imran Tahir
