Cricket South Africa’s DoC, Enoch Nkwe, has confirmed that two coaches could replace Mark Boucher after the T20 World Cup, one will be in charge of Test cricket and the other for white-ball cricket.
Mark Boucher shocked many South Africans last month when it was announced that he will be leaving the national team after the T20 World Cup.
The Director of Cricket, Enoch Nkwe, has confirmed that they will split the demanding role into two coaches with one looking after Test Cricket and the other managing the white-ball cricket squad.
“In the next eight years or so there’ll be an ICC event each year, so it’s an opportunity for us to head in that direction (split-coaching roles). We have the coaches in the system but it’s about finding the right balance,” Nkwe told Cricket Fanatics Magazine in an exclusive interview.
“We need a coach that’ll fit in our current Test team and the white-ball team hence we’re looking at splitting the roles because of the demanding schedule of international cricket. Ultimately we want a very refreshed, well-invested coach to be in charge of these projects (Test & Whiteball teams). It is tough coaching at this level so we’re taking into consideration the well-being of the individual as well,” he concluded.
The new Test cricket coach will have his first task in Australia this December when the Proteas tour for a three-match series. The white-ball coach on the other hand will have to prepare the ODI squad for next year’s World Cup in India.
“We do have an idea of who those guys (coaches) will be. We’re having conversations behind the scenes but we’re also wary of rushing the process only because we’re desperate to hire a coach,” said Nkwe.
“We had a coaches conference recently and we discussed the characters that we want our players to have in the system. We unpacked the philosophy we want to live or coach by.
“We want our players to consistently throw the first punch and be able to take control and also we want to blend the new crop of talent in a way that shortens the transition phase. The character we want in the coach must fit this philosophy and mindset as well.”
