Delano Potgieter and Tshepo Moreki both scored half-centuries as the Lions ended Day 3 with a lead of 195 against Western Province in the 4-Day Series final.

In 27 overs bowled in the first session on Day 3 of the 4-Day Series final, 86 runs were scored.

Night watchman Tshepo Moreki brought up his highest score in first-class cricket to become the third player this season to take a five-for and score a half-century in the same match.

Beyers Swanepoel and Migael Pretorius were the other players to do so this season.

The Lions only lost one wicket in the first session, Zubayr Hamza’s pull-shot tickling a ball going down leg to the keeper. He contributed 17.

The home side took a lead of 9 runs into the lunch break.

Dane Paterson was the one to dismiss Moreki on 57 shortly after lunch, the Lions reduced to 102-4.

Ryan Rickelton was next to go, he never offered a shot and was given out lbw, but the ball did seem like it would miss off-stump.

The next delivery, Mulder was strangled down the leg side and gloved a ball to the keeper.

Mthiwekhaya Nabe took both wickets to reduce the Lions to 113-6 and WP were now back in the driving seat in the match.

Beuruan Hendricks was carrying a hamstring niggle and was used sparingly, but he got the crucial wicket of Temba Bavuma who was starting to find his feet in the match. Hendricks angle the ball in and the Proteas skipper found a faint edge to the keeper.

He went out on 45 and the Lions were 159-7 with a lead of 72.

Verreynne took his 8th catch behind the stumps, the most in a match.

After tea Delano Potgieter and Bjorn Fortuin batted brilliantly to take the Lions into a lead of 158. But shortly after drinks Paterson dismissed Fortuin for 42 with a beautiful delivery that moved off a length and hit the top of off-stump.

Lions were now 245-8.

Potgieter continued to frustrate WP till the close of play.

He ended on 89 not out with the Lions 282-8.
