Aiden Markram scored the fastest century in World Cup history as the Proteas posted the highest-ever total in World Cup history.
The Proteas batters had the perfect start to their World Cup campaign.
Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram scored centuries in the Proteas’ open World Cup match against Sri Lanka in Delhi.
They were put into bat by Sri Lanka, and there was a slight worry when captain Temba Bavuma lost his wicket early on.
Despite a quick flurry of boundaries in the first three overs, Sri Lanka did well to pull things back for a short while.
Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen survived the initial bit of pressure, with a run rate of just under 5 in the first 10 overs.
It was crucial that the platform be set for the South African middle order, and the pair both scored centuries in a 204-run partnership off 174 balls.
De Kock lost his wicket the ball after reaching his century which he acquired in 84 balls (3 sixes, 12 fours).
Rassie then strung together a half-century partnership with Aiden Markram which saw the former bring up his century. He lost his wicket in 108 off 110 balls.
Then came carnage from Markram who brought up his century in 49 balls. This was the fastest century in World Cup history.
He finished my on 106 off 54 balls (14 fours and 3 sixes).
The average score at the ground was 230, and the Proteas almost doubled that. They finished on 428-5 thanks to contributions from Heinrich Klaasen (32 off 20), David Miller (39 off 21) and Marco Jansen (12 off 7).
This was the highest total against Sri Lanka in World Cups and the Proteas’ highest score against them in all ODIs.
It was also the highest World Cup total ever.
