South Africa capitulated on day 5 of the 1st Test against India, losing the match by 113 runs despite a half-century from Dean Elgar.
India backed up winning the toss with a performance to match. It was a poor batting display overall by the hosts on a ground that has been called their fortress.
The Proteas failed to match India in the batting department, being bowled out for under 200 in both their innings’.
After being 94-4 overnight, the Proteas lost 6 wickets for a measly 97 runs, all-out 20 minutes into the 2nd session. Bavuma was the last man standing on 35 not out, with Quinton de Kock’s 21 the next best score in the lower middle order.
Dean Elgar was SA’s highest scorer with 77 off 156 but it was not enough to help SA fight out a draw or pull off an unlikely win.
India’s first innings total of 327, headlined by KL Rahul’s 123 and Mayank Agawaral’s 60, was the vital distinction between the two sides. By contrast, Elgar and Markram only managed three runs as a partnership over 2 innings.
This further exposed SA’s issues with their opening pair.
The Proteas have always been known for their excellent seam attack, but India matched them through excellent performances from Mohammed Shami who took 5-44 during SA’s first innings and Jasprit Bummrah taking 3-50 to wipe out the hosts in their second innings.
All-in-all it was a dominant performance by India en route to claiming their first-ever victory in Centurion.
