Dewald Brevis fell 13 runs shy from breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record T20 score of 175. His 162 is now the highest score by a South African in T20 cricket.

Brevis stormed his way to a magnificent 162 off just 57 deliveries against the Knights in the CSA T20 Challenge.

The 19-year-old batter struck thirteen sixes and as many fours on his way to breaking Pieter Malan’s (140* for Western Province) 8-year-long record.

The talented batter went into his work very early on in his innings and raced to an 18-ball half-century.

He showed no signs of slowing down as it only took him 17 more deliveries to get to his maiden T20 ton in 35 balls.

Seventeen more deliveries were enough for the 19-year-old to enter the elite 150-runs club in T20 cricket.

In the last group match for the Titans in the CSA T20 Challenge, Brevis and his opening partner, Shaylen Pillay (52 off 45), put together an impressive 179 runs up top in just 14.3 overs.

His 100 is also the fourth-fastest in T20 history and 2nd fastest in South African domestic cricket history. But the fastest in South African franchise cricket history.

He also took a magnificent catch.

The pair was instrumental in leading the Titans to a mammoth 271 runs for the loss of three wickets. Not only did Brevis break individual records, but he also helped the Titans smash the highest T20 total by a South African domestic team.

The timing is perfect for Brevis as the national team is in search of an opening batter for the future. In only his second South African domestic T20 competition, the youngster has shown that he is a cut above the rest.

Is he next in line for the opening gig after Temba Bavuma and Reeza Hendricks?
