South Africa’s white-ball captain, Temba Bavuma, discussed a wide range of subjects in his exclusive interview with Cricket Fanatics Magazine.

Bavuma, through the course of the interview, revealed that his approach to captaincy was a combination of instinct and data analysis.

“I lean a bit more on the instinctive side.”

Given how quickly situations change in T20 cricket, Bavuma said, “You have to make decisions on your feet.”

Equally important, according to Bavuma, is for him to understand his players and “try to use your bowlers based on their strengths.”

Doing that “gives them the best opportunity to succeed or execute their skill.”

Another key facet of Bavuma’s captaincy is to ensure that the “game doesn’t run away from you.”

Sometimes that may require him to take calls that “go against the norm,” which he knows will invite criticism, but he is unperturbed by that.
