George van Heerden: ‘If you’re not looking for higher honours, then why are we playing?’

George van Heerden’s journey from South Africa U19 captain to Division 1 cricket has not followed a straightforward path.

After leaving school and representing South Africa at the U19 World Cup, Van Heerden spent time within the Rocks and Warriors setups but struggled for regular opportunities.

Eventually, he was given some honest advice: move to South Western Districts, play regularly in Division 2 and develop his game.

Looking back, Van Heerden believes that decision proved crucial.

“I’m so grateful that he was honest with me about that because I honestly think it’s been the best thing for my cricket, to kind of learn my game in the different formats and have time in the middle and understand what my options are at this level.”

Two seasons with SWD gave Van Heerden more than just game time. He was also entrusted with the captaincy and had an opportunity to develop as a leader.

Now, that journey has taken another step.

Van Heerden has returned to Division 1 after joining the Knights, where he hopes to continue pushing his game forward.

“I think the time was right now to go up and get some Bloem. So yeah, I’m really excited for this next year.”

The importance of first-class cricket

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was Van Heerden’s perspective on the development of young cricketers.

Despite the opportunities available in shorter-format cricket, the 22-year-old believes first-class cricket remains an important foundation for players who want to succeed across formats.

“I think it’s incredibly important. I think as a young player, you want to try and set yourself up to play all three.

“I think that’s ultimately the goal and first-class cricket sets that kind of up.”

For Van Heerden, the ambition is ultimately about continuing to climb.

“If you’re not looking for higher honours all the time, looking to push up the whole time, then why are we playing?”
