England ended the 1st session with a lead of 61, despite two fierce early wickets from Anrich Nortje on Day 2 of the 2nd Test at Old Trafford.

Anrich Nortje was on fire in the morning of the first session. He found swing both ways and bowled consistently above the 145 km/h mark. England struggled to handle the pace.

The first to crack was Zack Crawley who nicked him off a perfect length delivery to the keeper after a 101-ball 38.

Then came the set-up of Jonny Bairstow. A bunch of fierce inswingers before dishing out a reverse-swinging pearler, which snicked the edge of Bairstow’s bat. The English dangerman was out for 49. England was five down for 147 runs.

Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes took England into the lead, and after the first hour, they were 22 runs ahead with a score of 173-5.

The pair survived until the lunch break with England posting 212-5.
