South Africa ended Day 2 with 344-8 in the 1st Test against the West Indies at Port of Spain.
After only 15 overs were completed on Day 1 due to rain interruption, South Africa aimed to pile on the runs on Day 2 of the 1st Test.
Having lost Aiden Markram for 9 on Day 1, it was up to the rest of the batters to help post a respectable score. A deep batting line-up was selected, and the full depth was tested, as the Windies took regular wickets at crucial stages of the game to keep the Proteas relatively at bay.
Tony de Zorzi (78 off 145) and Temba Bavuma (86 off 182 balls) were the two stand-out performers, but the partnerships in the top 8 were key to the Proteas’ innings.
SA managed to string together four 50-run partnerships and two 40-run partnerships, which was the backbone of their innings – 43 between Markram and De Zorzi on Day 1, 43 between Stubbs (20) and De Zorzi, 51 between Bavuma and De Zorzi, 50 between David Bedingham (29) and Bavuma, 57 between Ryan Rickelton (19) and Bavuma and 57 between Kyle Verreynne (39) and Wiaan Mulder. Mulder is still at the crease with 37 not out.
Although the wickets that fell were quite soft, the Windies’ bowlers deserve credit for their determination with the ball.
Jayden Seales (2-57), Kemar Roach (2-53) and Jomel Warrican (3-66) were the key wicket-takers for the hosts.
