Annerie Dercksen’s steady 66 and Masabata Klaas’ crucial 3-for ensured that the Starlights got off the mark in the 3rd edition of the WSL at Six Gun Grill Newlands.
On Day 2 of the WSL, the Starlights were up against The Coronations. The Starlights were looking to improve on their performance from Day 1, in order to register their first win.
After Lizelle Lee fell for a duck on the second ball of the first over, the Starlights needed someone in their batting line-up to step up.
Enter the 19-year-old Annerie Dercksen. Dercksen and the No 3 three batsman, Andrie Steyn, put on a 102-run partnership, before Steyn fell for 29 runs, off Nadine de Klerk’s bowling.
Throughout their partnership, Dercksen was peppering the ball to all parts of the ground, playing a variety of shots, bringing her 50 up off 53 balls. Dercksen went on to score 66 off 62 balls, with 10 fours, before she was unluckily dismissed lbw by Nadine de Klerk, by a ball that seemed as if the impact was hitting outside off stump.
De Klerk’s dismissals of Steyn and Dercksen in two consecutive balls, momentarily gave the Coronations the edge in the game, but Starlights’ skipper Lara Goodall’s quick-fire 22 from 13 balls, ensured that her team reached a total of 132.
Kirstie Thomson played another important innings of 53 off 50 balls for the Coronations, looking as if she would get them over the line.
However, Masabata Klaas clean bowled her, as well as the dangerous De Klerk, stifling their chances of winning the game. Klaas finished with figures of 3/25 off 4 overs.
Tatum le Roux bowled the last over, needing to defend 12 runs. The Starlights won by 2 runs.
