Keshav Maharaj should be given the role of “Interim Test Captain” until a suitable candidate is identified, writes Ravi Reddy.

Keshav Maharaj made his Test debut against Australia back in 2016. He’s soft-spoken, humble yet assertive. However, his recent announcement upset the “apple cart” that is Proteas fans and management.

Maharaj indicated that it was his long-term ambition to one day lead the Proteas in all formats.

This was met with a mixture of scrutiny and joy among cricket fans all across South Africa. So why is it such a bad idea to have Keshav as skipper? Here are a few reasons:

The all-rounder role
With Vernon Philander’s recent retirement and the uninspiring performances from Dwaine Pretorius, the all-rounder role becomes more vital now than ever before. The Proteas batting woes have persisted for some time, making batsman number 7 a critical position in the team. Keshav while known for his aggressive batting cameos is presently averaging a meagre 15 with the bat.

Smith and Boucher are traditionalists
Unfortunately for Keshav, and any other bowler in the team for that matter won’t be considered for the role as Captain within the Smith/ Boucher administration. A batsman will always be at the forefront from the perspective of our Director of Cricket. More than likely, Aidan Markram will take up the mantle as Test captain eventually, but only time will tell.

Not all wickets are conducive to spin
A spinner isn’t always needed, especially for hard, fast wickets which wont be conducive for spin. This serves as an unfortunate disadvantage for young Keshav.

The other worthy contenders
Temba Bavuma, Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram are individuals that are that being considered in light of QDK being typecasted at the white ball skipper.

So, what is the Heavy Rollers view?

I applaud Maharaj for being the only person sharing his desire for the role. It’s almost as though the role of captaining South Africa is tainted or cursed, making many or any contender anxious about taking on this responsibility.

It’s not clear whether any of the aforementioned players are the right candidates for the role. Given this dilemma, I would recommend that Maharaj be given the role of “Interim Captain” until a suitable candidate is identified.

What are your thoughts Cricket Fanatics? Am I being harsh on CSA management? Is Keshav the right man for the role or should it be given to someone else? Sound off your comments below.

Yours in Peace, Love and Cricket
