After 8 years with the Cobras, Lizaad Williams has made the switch to the Titans, bringing his fierce competitive nature with him, writes Khalid Mohidin.
It’s been a tough couple of years for fast bowler Lizaad Williams. After breaking onto the scene as a youngster, he faced some tough battles with injuries and finding a rhythm in his game.
He has had some personal and professional setbacks but has never given up on his dream of being the best he can be.
Newly engaged, Williams’ move to the Titans is one he believes will bring vigour back into his career.
“I decided to leave because I wanted stability and security in my life,” said Williams exclusively to Cricket Fanatics Magazine.
“I’m getting married next year, and the Cobras only offered me a one-year contract where the Titans offered me a two-year deal.
“I also feel that I’ve stagnated over the last two years in my career, and playing opportunities have not come easy.
“The Titans bring a new challenge in a new environment and I have to adapt to a new system.
“The whole idea of moving out of Cape Town excites me because it pushes me to grow not only as a player but as a human being as a whole.”
Williams has always had a competitive edge to him. In fact, he embodies the stereotypes of a fierce fast bowler.
“I bring to the Titans what I brought to the Cobras – a bit of attitude and being in opponents faces,” he added.
“Obviously I won’t try to change myself to fit into their culture. I’m excited to play with everyone. I’m going to try and tap into their goals and culture.
“You want to make friends that you have long after your cricket career, so it’s important for me to mingle with everyone.
“I’m a firm believer that each and everyone can learn from each other regardless of the level you’ve played before.”
He signed off with a word of thanks to everyone who helped at Newlands.
“I’ve been at the Cobras for 8 years, so there’s so much gratitude I have for everyone there,” he said emotionally.
“They took me in as an 18-year-old and kept their faith in me. I definitely became a better human being at the Cobras.
“I will miss Cape Town a lot – the view and the crowd at Newlands.
“Thanks to Paul Adams and Ashwell Prince for believing in me and the whole management staff – Sherman Baatjies, Shane Jabaar – for keeping me on the field and sorting out my injuries
“Faiek Davids for always being prepared to throwing extra balls at me.
“Israar Roman and the whole Newlands staff for all their support over the years.”
