Cape Cobras wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne says he is looking to use the 4-Day Series campaign as a springboard for Test selection.

Following a breakthrough 2019-20 season that brought about the much-coveted Proteas ODI debut, Kyle Verreynne has picked up from where he’s left off with a solid 85 for the Cobras in the first 4-day game. Even on a trickier surface, he’s found his method to take the initiative and impress.

“Yeah, it’s been quite difficult to bat over the course of three days,” said Verreynne exclusively to Cricket Fanatics Magazine. “I tried to drive as little as possible and waited for them to bowl short – that’s what’s been the key to scoring most of the runs today.”

While he’s still quite early in his career, Verreynne has established a reputation as a determined and shrewd operator when he bats.

It’s worked to great effect considering the fact that he boasts a respectable average above 50 and is ranked among the brightest up-and-coming talents in the country.

The Test aspirations are strong, but more importantly, the situation at hand is most important.

“It’s a shortened season compared to normal, but for myself, I want to get into the Test side especially with a couple of series coming up.

“I’m looking to use the next few games to put a stamp out there and hopefully get in the Test team. But at the moment, I’m focusing on winning this game for the Cobras.”

Verreynne was part of the Proteas side that successfully swept an ODI series 3-0 against Australia earlier this year.

He put together a couple of stabilizing knocks, and his steady rise in domestic cricket should put him in striking distance for more international caps in the near future.

The wicketkeeper batsman scored 85 against the Titans to take the Cobras from 3/29 to 201 all out.

After the match, he caught up with Khalid Mohidin and expressed what it’s like to be back playing cricket as well as his aims when it comes to national selection:
