We take a look at three players who were unlucky not to be chosen for the South Africa A and South Africa Emerging sides.
1) Kyle Verreynne
This was a surprising snub given his consistency over the last two seasons. Verreynne has been stellar with the bat as well as with the gloves. He won South Africa domestic Newcomer of the Year for the 2017-18 season; he scored 583 runs at an average of 44.84 in the 4-Day Franchise Series and as a wicketkeeper had the most dismissals with 33 in the 2018-19 season. He was the second-highest scorer in the One-Day Cup with 453 runs at an average of 64.71 and as wicketkeeper, he took the third-most dismissals with 9 in the 2018-19 season. These stats were significantly better than all the wicketkeepers who were selected in both the SA A and SA Emerging sides.
2) Wihan Lubbe
The 26-year-old is one of the most underrated all-rounders on the domestic scene. He scored 1,960 runs at an average of 39.20 with the bat and took 25 wickets in 37 first-class games. This included five centuries and nine half-centuries. He also has eight half-centuries in List A cricket and a T20 century to his name. He failed to be selected at the pre-national level. A SA Emerging side selection for Lubbe should have at least been on the cards, but unfortunately, this was not the case.
3) Keegan Petersen
The 25-year-old was the top run scorer in the 4-Day Franchise Series with 923 runs at an average of 61.53 in a Knights side that struggled to perform and finished with only two wins to their name. In nine matches in the One-Day Cup, he scored 327 runs at an average of 46.71, the most for his side, in a tournament that saw them finish second from bottom. His performances have been a representation of his mental toughness because he proved that he could perform regardless of the difficult circumstances.
