The CSA T20 Challenge got underway this weekend, with the opening round producing big individual performances, high-scoring encounters and exciting finishes across the country.

North West Dragons start with a win

The North West Dragons began their campaign with a seven-wicket victory over the Warriors at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

The Warriors posted 128/6 from their 20 overs after being sent in, before the Dragons completed a comfortable chase, reaching 131/3 in 15.3 overs.

Dragons captain Rubin Hermann led the chase with an unbeaten 55 off 31 balls, including five fours and three sixes, while Ludwich Schuld contributed 33 off 22.

Titans make light work of Western Province total

The Titans produced a destructive run chase to beat Western Province by five wickets in Friday’s second match at SuperSport Park.

Western Province posted a competitive 186/4 from their 20 overs, with Joshua van Heerden making 64 off 37 balls and Edward Moore contributing 62 off 48.

The Titans, however, needed just 14.5 overs to reach 190/5.

Leus du Plooy led the assault with 77 off only 28 balls, smashing five fours and eight sixes, while Sinethemba Qeshile struck 59 off 25 balls. Eathan Bosch then finished the chase with an unbeaten 22 off 10.

Rain washes out Northern Cape and Border

Saturday’s meeting between Northern Cape and Border at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain.

With no result possible, the teams shared the points.

Lions edge Dolphins in high-scoring thriller

The Lions held their nerve to beat the Dolphins by eight runs at Kingsmead on Sunday.

The Lions posted an imposing 202/4 from their 20 overs, with Zubayr Hamza top-scoring with 66 off 38 balls and Reeza Hendricks contributing 50 off 35.

The Dolphins mounted a strong response and reached 194/6, with Jason Smith scoring 66, but the Lions successfully defended their total to claim an eight-run victory.

Qeshile leads Titans to back-to-back wins

The Titans made it two wins from two after beating the Mpumalanga Rhinos by nine wickets in a rain-reduced encounter at Uplands College in White River.

The Rhinos made 75/2 from their six overs before the Titans raced to 79/1 in just five overs.

Sinethemba Qeshile was the standout performer, smashing 56 from only 18 balls at a strike rate of 311.11. His innings included seven fours and four sixes and gave the Titans a flying start to the competition after his 59 against Western Province two days earlier.

Western Province edge Knights

Western Province bounced back from their opening defeat to the Titans with a five-wicket victory over the Knights at Newlands.

After being sent in, the Knights posted 168/7 from their 20 overs. Joshua Bird scored 41 off 26 balls, Ruan Haasbroek contributed 39 off 31, while Ernest Motswiri finished unbeaten on 30 off 20.

Western Province completed the chase by reaching 169/5, with Daniel Smith producing the decisive innings.

Smith finished unbeaten on 86 off 46 balls to guide Western Province to their first victory of the competition.

Weekend wrap

The opening weekend produced an entertaining start to the competition, with the Titans emerging with two victories from their first two matches.

The North West Dragons and Lions also opened their campaigns with victories, while Western Province responded to their opening defeat against the Titans by beating the Knights at Newlands.

Sinethemba Qeshile was one of the standout performers of the weekend, following his 59 off 25 against Western Province with a blistering 56 off 18 against the Mpumalanga Rhinos.

Daniel Smith’s unbeaten 86 for Western Province, Rubin Hermann’s unbeaten 55 for the Dragons and the Lions’ successful defence of 202 at Kingsmead were among the other notable performances from the opening round.
