Australia Women began their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 65-run victory over Proteas Women at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday.

After being sent in to bat, Australia recovered from an early wobble to post an imposing 172/8 before bowling South Africa out for 107 in 16.4 overs.

The Proteas made the perfect start when Marizanne Kapp struck in the first over, removing Georgia Voll for a duck with just one run on the board. Beth Mooney’s brief stay ended for seven when she was caught behind off Shabnim Ismail, leaving Australia at 24/2.

However, Phoebe Litchfield launched a stunning counterattack. The left-hander raced to 50 from just 23 deliveries, striking nine fours and a six in a breathtaking innings of 50 from 24 balls. Together with Ellyse Perry, she added 37 runs for the third wicket to wrest back momentum.

South Africa managed to halt the charge briefly when Ayabonga Khaka dismissed Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner in quick succession, reducing Australia to 62/4 in the eighth over.

Perry then steadied the innings with a composed 36 from 26 balls before a crucial partnership between Perry and Georgia Wareham propelled Australia towards a competitive total. The pair added 58 runs for the fifth wicket, with Wareham contributing a valuable 32 from 22 deliveries.

Late contributions from Annabel Sutherland (21 off 14), Nicola Carey (13 not out) and Kim Garth (5 not out) lifted Australia to 172/8.

Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout performer with the ball for South Africa, returning excellent figures of 2/22 from her four overs. Khaka and Nadine de Klerk also claimed two wickets apiece, while Kapp and Ismail picked up one wicket each.

Chasing 173, South Africa’s innings never gained momentum. Sophie Molineux struck with the final ball of the opening over to remove Sune Luus, before Kim Garth bowled Annerie Dercksen to leave the Proteas struggling at 7/2.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt and Nadine de Klerk attempted to rebuild, adding 41 runs for the third wicket. De Klerk provided some resistance with 25 from 22 balls, including two sixes, while Wolvaardt anchored the innings with 44 from 39 deliveries.

Just as South Africa appeared to be rebuilding, Georgia Wareham and Alana King tightened Australia’s grip on the contest. Wareham dismissed De Klerk before Kapp was run out for a quick-fire 12 from six balls, triggering a collapse.

The Proteas lost their final seven wickets for just 25 runs as Australia’s spin attack took complete control. Wareham finished with outstanding figures of 3/13 from 2.4 overs, while Molineux and King each claimed two wickets. Gardner added one wicket as South Africa were dismissed for 107.

Wolvaardt’s 44 was the highest score for South Africa, but no other batter passed 25 as Australia’s disciplined bowling attack proved too strong.

The victory gives Australia a perfect start to their World Cup campaign, while South Africa will be left searching for answers after a disappointing batting display following several promising moments with the ball.
