The Proteas bowled Pakistan out for 378 in their first innings and ended Day 2 on 216-6 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
Salman (52*) and Rizwan (62*) took Pakistan to 313-5 on Day 1.
They continued to add runs to their total, their partnership growing to 153.
But that was the highlight for the hosts in the first session, as South Africa fought back with the ball.
With 362 on the board, Senuran Muthasamy got the Proteas’ first wicket of the day. He found the edge of Rizwan to the Keeper.
A few balls later he bowled Noman Ali and the ball thereafter he removed Sajid Khan finding his edge to slip. Pakistan were now 362-8.
This brought up his maiden Test 5-for.
Muthusamy then orchestrated the stumping of Shaheen Afridi, and Pakistan were 378-9.
He finished with 6-117.
Salman went for a big shot and was caught on the boundary, out for 93, Prenelan Subrayen getting his 2nd.
Pakistan were all out for 378.
South Africa survived till lunch with 10-0 on the board.
SA put on 45 when they lost their first wicket, Markram looped up a delivery to the keeper. Noman Ali was the wicket taker.
He struck again, dismissing Wiaan Mulder for 17. SA were reduced to 80-2.
South Africa went into Tea on 112-2.
Ryan Rickelton scored 71 off 137 balls before he edged Agha Salman to first slip.
SA were now 174-3.
Tristan Stubbs was next to go, he found a slight edge to the keeper for Noman’s third. Shortly after, Brevis guided the ball to midwicket off the bowling of Sajid Khan. SA were 193-5.
Kyle Verreynne (2) was next to be dismissed. SA were now in trouble on 200-6.
The day ended with SA on 216-6.
De Zorzi was on 81* and Muthusamy on 6*.
The Proteas trail by 162 runs.
