Pakistan ended Day 1 on 313-5 against South Africa in the 1st Test at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
The first advantage on an abrasive surface went to Pakistan, who won the toss and elected to bat first.
The Proteas went with three spinners, a sign of what was expected from the surface.
The Proteas, however, got an early breakthrough, Kagiso Rabada trapping Abdullah Shafique lbw.
That was the only wicket to fall in the first session, as Pakistan went into Lunch on 107-1.
Imam-Ul-Haq was on 59* and captain Shan Masood was on 44*, both finding it easy to deal with the conditions of the pitch.
Shan brought up his half-century after the break.
It was tighter from South Africa with the ball, slowing down the run rate, which shifted the pressure back onto the batters.
The pressure finally paid off, Subrayen trapping Shan lbw after a solid 76 off 147 balls. Pakistan were 163-2.
Pakistan got to 199, Imam on 93 (153 balls), and with Tea not far away, Muthusamy forced him to guide the ball to short leg.
On the following delivery, Saud Shakeel popped the ball back to Muthusamy. Pakistan were now 199-4 when Tea was called.
An amazing review after Tea by Simon Harmer saw him dismiss crowd favourite Babar Azam (23) without a run being added to the score.
Things tipped back into Pakistan’s favour as Muhammad Rizwan and Salman Agha got stuck in with a 100-plus partnership.
Salman (52*) and Rizwan (62*) took Pakistan to 313-5.
