Matthew Breetzke became the first ever player to score 150 on debut in ODI cricket.
His innings was the main talking point in the tri-series match against New Zealand on Monday.
New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Breetzke was sensational in his approach, seeing off the new ball and playing beautifully around the ground, particularly square of the wicket.
He opened the batting and was supported by a couple of cameos, with no one in the top order really kicking on with him. Bavuma scored 20, but after losing his wicket in the 8th over, it was Jason Smith who helped SA recover from 37-1 to 130. Smith scored 42 and formed a 93-run partnership with Breetzke.
Wiaan Mulder came to the crease after Kyle Verreynne was dismissed with SA on 132-3, and he helped share the special moment with Breetzke, who became the fourth South African to score a century on debut.
They took SA past the 200-run mark.
In the 43rd over, Breetzke hit a four down leg-side to bring up the 100-run partnership between the pair.
Breetzke then brought up his 150 with a maximum on the last ball of the 45th over to become the first ever player to score 150 on debut in ODI cricket.
This broke a 47-year record set by Desmond Haynes who scored 148 on debut on 22 February 1978 against Australia.
Breetzke lost his wicket two balls later after taking SA to 263-4.
His knock was superb, scoring 150 off 148 balls (11 fours, 5 sixes).
This also brought a 131-run partnership with Mulder to an end.
Mulder was the other batter to impress scoring 64 off 60 balls (5 fours, 1 six).
South Africa ended their innings on 304-6.
New Zealand chased down the total pretty easily. Kane Williamson (133) and Devon Conway (97) scored the bulk of the runs.
They finished with a total of 308-4 and won by six wickets.
Senuran Muthusamy was the top wicket taker with 2-50.
