Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs scored maiden centuries as South Africa ended Day 1 with 307-2 in the 2nd Test against Bangladesh.
The Proteas won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting surface in Chattogram.
The visitors started off solidly with Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi putting 69 runs on the board in 17 overs.
But a soft dismissal got Bangladesh their first breakthrough, in the 18th over. A poor decision by captain Markram (33) saw SA reduced to 69-1 when he double stepped Miraz looking for a big one, but instead guided the ball straight to mid on.
Tristan Stubbs brought calmness to the middle, and South Africa continued where they left off. They reached the 100-run mark in the 26th over.
After 28 overs, Lunch was called with SA on 109-1, De Zorzi (49*) and Stubbs (23) rebuilding well after the fall of the wicket.
After lunch, the pair kept the scoreboard ticking. They reached 150 by the 42nd over.
They brought up their 100-run partnership in on the first ball of the 49th over and Stubbs brought up his 2nd career half-century a few balls later.
De Zorzi hit a boundary with a sweep shot and brought up his maiden century in 146 balls in the 55th over and with that 203 for SA.
Tea was called with the Proteas on 205-1 in 56 overs.
After the break, the pair continued to pile on the runs.
Stubbs followed De Zorzi’s example and brought up a maiden century for himself. His ton came in 194 balls (six fours, three sixes).
The pair scored a partnership of 201 runs but Stubbs only made it to 106, when he was bowled by Taijul for his second wicket of the day.
David Bedingham (18*) stuck around with De Zorzi (141*) till the end of the day’s play, with South Africa on 307-2.
The players came off early due to bad light.
