Shortly after sundown in the Cape on Sunday the rain Gods opened their gates and let it storm. The WSL 4.0 opening day on Monday was halted by heavy rain and thunderstorms which made it possible for only one full game to take place.
The Starlights recorded the only win of the day. A welcomed return for Dane van Niekerk who picked up 2 for 13 to help restrict the South Africa U19’s to a meagre total to then chase it down with complete ease with an unbeaten half-century.
Coronations, Ayabonga Khaka, was the main destroyer to claim 3-15 to restrict Thistles to 89-8 before the rain had its final say and no further play was possible while the third match of the day was abandoned without a ball bowled.
Day 2 had a few light showers early in the morning but a full day’s play was possible. Starlights kicked off the day’s proceedings with a narrow victory over Coronations despite being restricted to 108-8 which saw Nadine de Klerk pick up 3-23. Izelle Celliers and Tazmin Brits top scored with 30s.
SA U19’s preparation has been off to a bitter start after they got restricted to 82-7 against Starlights on Monday and got bowled out for a paltry 46 with Mlaba claiming 3 wickets for 0 runs. Sunette Viljoen-Louw and Andrie Steyn needed only 41 balls to knock off the score.
No rest for the SA U19s as they were up against Coronations in the final game of the day where Goodall’s ladies posted 112-4.
The U19s got off to a good start then the collapse followed, Thabitha La Grange led the way with 3-15 with De Figuerido, De Klerk and Thompson all picking up two wickets each to bowl them out for 78 in 20 overs.
