POTENTIAL WILD CARD SIGNINGS:

LOCAL SOUTH AFRICAN SNUBS

Temba Bavuma – the incumbent Proteas shorter-formats skipper may not have gotten a team during the SA20 auction but he might stand a decent chance as a potential wildcard pick. Despite continued struggles in international T20s, he does have a solid record in the domestic T20 scene. Plus he can also add value with his tactical nous and experience.

Andile Phehlukwayo – another of the centrally contracted Proteas is the Dolphins all-rounder. While he has gradually drifted out of the T20I plans as of late, Phehlukwayo has improved his batting in the domestic circuit and can bowl handy cutters at any phase of the innings.

Bamanye Xenxe – the exciting young Boland pace phenom impressed in the CSA T20 Challenge, and that may has well be the understatement of the day. His tally of 18 wickets topped the table, and the Paarl Rocks heavily benefited from his strong performances. Xenxe’s exploits in this tournament couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, and don’t be surprised if any of the other four teams choose to take a chance on him.

Jacques Snyman – the Knights batter can play anywhere in the top 6 and put his free-wheeling style on full display. In addition, he’s able to bowl some part-time offspin, which makes him a handy all-round choice to have in the squad. Snyman’s 194 runs at a strike rate of nearly 160 in the T20 Challenge has certainly done his chances plenty of good.

Sibonelo Makhanya – one of the most improved domestic cricketers, the Titans skipper has morphed into a fearless middle-order hitter after a few seasons of uncertainty over his role. Initially starting off as an allrounder, Makhanya has completely shifted his focus to his batting, and that’s proven to be instrumental. Unafraid to step out of his comfort zone – he left the Dolphins (his home side) for the Titans – he could be a very useful recruit.

Dean Elgar – now you may or may not associate the Proteas Test skipper with the shortest format. And it might be beyond 3 years ago since he had a solid season in the now-defunct Mzansi Super League, but who says he can’t adjust? Then again, he seemingly doesn’t have time on his side, and game time will be hard to come by. But in terms of reputation, he still could be part of the conversation.
