An unbroken 57-run stand between skipper Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen highlighted what was a very fruitful start of the 2nd innings for the hosts.
With a useful first-innings advantage of 69, the Proteas batters had to get to work on a pitch that was getting increasingly spin-friendly. Sarel Erwee struggled for much of his stay and was finally trapped LBW by Ebadot Hossain, bringing an end to a decent opening stand of 48. This would be the only success for Bangladesh in this session.
However, it was the captain who was in the limelight. Elgar once again picked up the pace, scoring boundaries at regular intervals. He reached his 21st Test half-century, with resolute but measured strokeplay. He survived two dropped catches at slip, but more importantly, cashed in on the reprieves.
It’s far from over, and it now boils down to how much the Proteas feel will be enough to defend. Catch the next session in about half an hour.
