Session one on day four went to South Africa, who struck early through Keshav Maharaj to reduce India to 35-1, writes Khalid Mohidin.
The Proteas showed resistance in the first session on day four, particularly through Senuran Muthusamy who ended unbeaten on a 106-ball 33. He was patient and refrained from being too risky. Although, when there was one wicket left to fall, being more aggressive could have shaved a little more off India’s lead.
South Africa got themselves within 71 runs of India’s total of 502/7, a valiant effort for a side who many believed would crumble on the dusty surfaces.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s two wickets ensured that India kept a solid lead. The spinner finished with 7-145 in his 46.2 overs.
Keshav Maharaj produced the moment of the session, with a classical left-arm spinner’s wicket. He drew in Mayank Agarwal who attempted to bloc a length delivery which spun away from his body and into the hands of Faf du Plessis at fits slip.
Idia took a lead of 106 runs into lunch.
