“At half-time, we knew we were up against it,” said Proteas batsman, Rassie van der Dussen, as he reflected on South Africa’s loss to Pakistan in the fourth T20 at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Conceding that the Proteas “fell away from the 12th over,” van der Dussen said the pitch was drier and the cracks started opening up. The par score on this pitch, according to van der Dussen, was between 170 and 180.

With four frontline batsmen, van der Dussen said he did not feel the need to bat conservatively because the all-rounders are capable with the bat. “We know how we want to bat and checkpoints we want to reach. We lost a wicket or two too many in the middle. Unfortunately, it didn’t come off for them,” said van der Dussen.

Reflecting on the results of the series, van der Dussen said, “If you take seven of the best players out of any team, they’ll be up against it. The guys that came in were brilliant in stages.” Among the positives from this series, “for the coaching to see the depth of the squad and see where guys are at” was most crucial.
