Naturally, only a few former South Africa U19 stars quickly find their feet in domestic cricket, Wandile Makwetu is one of those who had a tough time in his first season at the top but has recently started to climb the ladder, to become Domestic Newcomer of the Season, writes Ongama Gcwabe.

Having been rewarded with a franchise contract at 19, a Titans contract no less, Makwetu’s future looked bright at the Titans and was bound for higher honours.

Strong competition at the Titans meant he would sit out most of the games and he didn’t shine as we thought he would when he got game time.

The move to the Knights came as a shock to myself and to many fans around the country, leaving a secure, comfortable family-like space at the Titans must’ve been a tough decision to take.

But the youngster knew that he needed a fresh start to kick start his career at the top of SA cricket. It worked out well for him.

He was rewarded with the Domestic Newcomer of the Season at the CSA awards for his efforts captaining the Knights at only 21 years old, in the absence of Pite van Biljon.

Not only did he exceed expectations in the captaincy department, but he put in good performances to match it. He averaged 49.50 with three 50s and a 100 in the 4-Day Franchise Series, and averaged 36.55 with one century in the One-Day Cup.

He also took 34 catches and one stumping in first-class cricket, and 17 catches and 4 stumpings in List A games throughout the season.

“I feel honoured and privileged to be recognized for this award, it’s the cherry on top of a more than satisfactory season for me!” Makwetu told Cricket Fanatics Magazine in an exclusive interview.

“I am grateful for the support I have had from teammates and coaches in a new environment at the Knights as well as the support and love of my family, friends, and close inner circle!

“Really looking forward to the next season whenever it gets underway.”

The award will undoubtedly be a confidence booster for the youngster and one can only wonder what will the 2020/21 season bring for him and his team.
