The 2026/27 South African domestic season is well underway, with the red-ball competitions getting off to a lively start across the country.

Division 1 opened with four matches as defending champions DP World Lions hosted Dafabet Boland at the DP World Wanderers Stadium, Momentum Multiply Titans welcomed Hollywoodbets Dolphins to SuperSport Park, YesPlay WP Cobras faced Dafabet Warriors at Newlands, while newly promoted Flexbrands Knights entertained North West Dragons at Grey College in Bloemfontein.

Momentum Multiply Titans vs Hollywoodbets Dolphins

The Titans drew first blood at home with a commanding innings-and-60-run victory over the Dolphins, signalling their intentions for the season early on.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on Day 1, but were bowled out for 157 inside 46 overs. Returning batter Grant Roelofsen top-scored with 65, while Marco Jansen, Dayyaan Galiem and new signing Beyers Swanepoel picked up three wickets apiece for the hosts.

In response, the Titans found themselves in some early trouble before eventually taking control of the contest.

Donovan Ferreira was at the heart of the turnaround, smashing a massive 163 to propel the Titans to 421 and establish a commanding first-innings advantage.

The Dolphins needed 264 simply to make the Titans bat again, but a regular fall of wickets prevented them from mounting a serious fightback. Khaya Zondo reached a half-century, but the visitors were eventually dismissed for 204 as the Titans completed an innings-and-60-run victory.

DP World Lions vs Dafabet Boland

At the Wanderers, the Lions elected to bat first and made good use of their home conditions.

Proteas Test captain Temba Bavuma led the way with 91, while Mitchell van Buuren contributed 52 and Ryan Rickelton made 49 as the defending champions posted 314.

Boland were not to be outdone.

Lehan Botha produced a superb 170 to help the visitors reach 348 and establish a 34-run first-innings advantage, but one of the biggest stories of the match came from South Africa Under-19 youngster JJ Basson.

Making his first-class debut for the Lions, Basson claimed an impressive 7/62.

Day 3 then belonged to Rickelton, who brought up his 19th first-class century and finished the day unbeaten on 113.

He eventually fell for 127 on the final morning before the Lions declared their second innings on 312/8, leaving Boland with a difficult final-day chase.

Ruan Terblanche reached a half-century for the visitors, while Basson added another four wickets to complete an outstanding 11-wicket haul on debut.

Time ultimately ran out, however, and the match ended in a draw.

YesPlay WP Cobras vs Dafabet Warriors

The Cobras won the toss at Newlands and elected to bowl first, but the Warriors built themselves a strong first-innings total.

Oliver Whitehead was the standout bowler for the hosts, recording his maiden first-class five-wicket haul, but half-centuries from Sibonelo Makhanya, Patrick Kruger and captain Senuran Muthusamy helped the Warriors reach 347.

The Cobras struggled badly in response.

An underwhelming batting display saw the hosts dismissed for just 143, handing the Warriors a substantial first-innings advantage.

Muthusamy opted against enforcing the follow-on, with the Warriors returning to the crease and eventually declaring on 96/4 to set the four-time champions a target of 301.

The Cobras reached 110/1 during their chase on Day 4 before rain interrupted proceedings and took valuable time out of the contest.

They eventually finished on 145 without being able to complete the chase as another opening-round encounter ended in a draw.

Flexbrands Knights vs North West Dragons

The final Division 1 encounter took place in the City of Roses, where the North West Dragons made an immediate impression following the Knights’ promotion to the top flight.

Batting first, the Dragons posted 251, with Diego Rosier scoring 71 and Meeka-eel Prince contributing 64.

Gihahn Cloete then produced the standout innings for the Knights, reaching triple figures with 118, but the hosts were still dismissed 23 runs short of the Dragons’ first-innings total.

Daryn Dupavillon and Onke Nyaku were instrumental with the ball, both claiming four-wicket hauls.

Rosier then followed his first-innings 71 with a century in the second innings, completing an excellent individual match and helping the Dragons set the Knights a target of 367 on the final day.

It proved beyond the hosts.

The Knights managed 231 in their pursuit before being bowled out, handing the Dragons a convincing 135-run victory and a winning start to their campaign.

With the first round completed, the North West Dragons and Momentum Multiply Titans lead the way in Pool A and Pool B respectively after collecting the opening victories of the Division 1 season.

Round 2 gets underway on Thursday, 17 September, with the Knights hosting the Lions, Boland facing the Dragons, the Titans travelling to take on the Warriors, and the Cobras hosting the Dolphins.
