“There was a silent confidence going around in the camp,” said Proteas women’s stand-in captain, Sune Luus, while reflecting on South Africa’s series win over India in the T20 leg of the tour.
“There was no fear of failure, everyone was really confident going into the tour. Everybody was determined to put in the performances and move forward as a team,” Luus continued.
Proteas women’s coach, Hilton Moreeng, attributed the team’s success to “exceptionally good planning” and “controlling what we can.”
Luus emphasized the importance of staying in the present and taking each game as it comes. With South Africa now at number 2 in the world rankings, Luus said the team did not pay a lot of attention to rankings, but the players are aware that it is key for them to keep putting in performances to ensure that South African players are in the top ten in all disciplines of the game.
If South Africa continue to do that, “we can potentially be number 1 in the world after the World Cup next year,” said Luus.
India, having played in two World Cup finals, and renowned for dominating in spinning conditions were always perceived as a mighty opponent by the Proteas. “In the past two years, we’ve been trying to get different skills against spin. We played spin extremely well. That’s one reason we were successful this tour,” explained Luus.
Momentum’s Head of Sponsorship and Events, Carel Bosman, who was also present for this press conference congratulated the team for winning the series. “To see what this team has done and where they are going, we should be very proud.”
“We’ve been outspoken about the fact that we believe in this team. When we got involved, we believed they could be the best,” said Bosman.
