The Proteas won their final game of the group stages against Nepal in the T20 World Cup by one run.

The Proteas came into the match having already qualified for the Super Eights.

They lost the toss and were put in to bat.

They had a terrible innings, that seemed to lack intensity and a misjudgment of the conditions. Reeza Hendricks was the one batter that stood out, he scored 43 off 49 balls, before he was caught and bowled by Dipendra Singh Airee.

The other notable batter was Tristan Stubbs who scored a handy 27 off 18 balls.

The rest of the batters were disappointing. Spin was definitely their downfall.

Airee took 3-21 and Kushal Bhurtel finished with 4-19.

South Africa only managed 115-7 on pitch where 130-150 would have been a decent total.

Nepal had a solid start with the bat as they brought up 35 runs in 7.2 overs. They managed to survive a dropped catch from Kagiso Rabada off his own bowling in the second over.

The introduction of Tabraiz Shamsi, however, set them back a little with two wickets in the eighth over.

The Proteas managed to dry up the runs after the breakthroughs which saw Nepal reach 48-2 after 10 overs.

The following over Anrich Nortje conceded 12 runs which reduced the pressure on Nepal.

Anil Sah and Aasif Sheikh scored 50 off 36 balls to take Nepal to 85-2, before Markram dismissed Sah for 27 in the 14th over.

Nepal needed 18 off 18. Shamsi struck in the 18th over to reduce them to 99-4.

Shamsi then took out Nepal’s best batter Aasif after a well-played 42, reducing them to 100-5  after 18 overs.

Needing 16 off the last two overs, Nortje took a wicket and bowled 3 dot balls. But he was hit for a massive six and conceded two runs off the final two balls.

Nepal now needed 8 off 6 balls to make history.

Baartman bowled two dots and then was hit for four and conceded two. Nepal needed 2 from 2. Baartman bowled a dot and then a forced single saw a run out at the bowler’s end.

South Africa won by one run.
