Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara cashed in on a pitch that has deteriorated over the two sessions. The Proteas bowlers continued with their plan, bowling shorter deliveries and probing for the edge.
The India pair comfortably batted through the pressure and put on a 246-ball 138-run partnership to frustrate South Africa.
Kagiso Rabada finally got his line and length right to dismiss Pujara for a well-played 58 off 112 deliveries.
Virat Kohli and Agarwal will aim to add more to their total. India were 168-2 by tea.
