The SA U19 Women beat Bangladesh to strengthen their chances in the T20 World Cup.
Kayla Reyneke was superb with the ball as South Africa U19 restricted Bangladesh U19 to a below par total in their super-six clash in Potchefstroom.
Madison Landsman and Karabo Meso shared in a 70-run partnership to chase down 107 runs with 7 balls remaining.
After Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first, they got off to a perfect start going at nearly 8-runs to the over. They were 22 without loss after 3 overs. South Africa managed to put the squeeze on and keep things quiet in the next three overs to comeback in the powerplay to have Bangladesh at 28-1 after 6 overs.
Kayla Reyneke finished with incredible figures of 4-19. Her first over went for 12 runs where Dilara Aktar struck three successive boundaries in the 8th over which Bangladesh desperately needed.
She eventually won the battle and dismissed Dilara just before the halfway stage to have Bangladesh in trouble on 51-2. She was innovative and effective throughout her 4-over spell. She kept switching things up by taking pace off and bowling even shorter and more slower deliveries which made life difficult for the batters to settle at the crease.
A bit of a partnership was forming between Shorna Akter and Sumaiya Akter and they got their side to 80-3 at the 15-over mark.
South Africa picked up wickets at regular intervals and never allowed the batters to settle. They reached 100 runs in the penultimate over and eventually reached 106-6 in their 20 over alottment.
SA U19 got off to a cautious start in their run-chase. Bangladesh setting their counterparts a meagre total started off brilliantly inside the first three overs with SA on 4-1 before Simone Lourens started to tee off with a couple of boundaries. But she fell for a 22-ball 26 as SA reached 30 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.
Bangladesh continued to contain SA and keep things tight and built pressure with dot balls as Reyneke looked to go big but got caught as a Rabeya Khan (3-18) double strike pegged them back even further to 33-4 aftet 8 overs. They were right back into this game.
A fantastic partnership between Madison Landsman (37) and Karabo Meso (32*), who hit the winning runs, killed all but the little hope their opponents had as they held their composure and remained calm to get SA one step closer.
South Africa U19 live to see another day and will face off against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in their second super-six clash.
