Rudi Second’s valiant knock of 171 from 246 (15×4, 3×6), in a losing cause for the Warriors, spearheads the highlights of the final day’s action of Round 4 of the 4-Day Series, writes Abhai Sawkar.
It may have happened in a losing situation, but it was a beacon of hope for the Warriors in what was a mountain of a 2nd-innings chase.
LIONS VS WARRIORS
The Lions notched up a key away victory after forestalling what would’ve been an unbelievable comeback from the Warriors.
512 may have been too much to chase, but it was a spirited, dogged effort from the home team to end up short by 76. Rudi Second put together a brilliant 171 and formed an 87-run stand with Lesiba Ngoepe. It’s to be noted that Second was part of Test plans not long ago, and he’s on track to throwing his hat in the ring once again.
The lower order showed some fight and resistance – Tshepo Ntuli (40) added 99 with Second, but ultimately it was a colossal chase. Delano Potgieter and Sisanda Magala took three wickets each, and it ended up a fairly comfortable win for the Lions.
Lions 389 + 241/5
Warriors 118 + 436 (Second 171 – Potgieter 3/51)
TITANS VS COBRAS
The action at Centurion finished up as a draw today, as the Cobras batted through for much of the day to save the game.
A sprightly 47 from debutant opener Jonathan Bird further underlined his potential at this level, and he added 100 with newly capped Proteas Test opener, Pieter Malan.
However, following the robust opening stand, a few quick wickets fell, as Lizaad Williams and Thando Ntini fought back well. Fortunately for the visitors, Tony de Zorzi and Brendon Louw batted with composure until the close.
Cape Cobras 411 + 207/5 (P Malan 57, Bird 47 – T Ntini 2/26)
Titans 440
