In-form batter, Ryan Rickelton produced a second hundred in three matches to help the Imperial Lions to a daunting first inning score before a three-wicket haul from Duanne Olivier left the GbetsRocks in a precarious position on day two of their Cricket South Africa (CSA) 4-Day Domestic Series clash in Johannesburg on Friday.
Rickelton dispatched 19 boundaries on his way to a ninth career century worth 117 off 140 balls to propel the hosts to 350 all out in reply. While Lions fast bowler Olivier picked up three wickets in addition to his four in the first innings to leave the Rocks trailing by 149 runs at stumps.
Matches across Division One and Division Two of the four-day competition are streamed live via SuperSport’s YouTube channel, with the third-round action taking place between 18-21 November.
Having dismissed their opponents for 170 on day one, the first-placed Lions began the day on 25 / 1, with Reeza Hendricks (47) and Rickelton adding 83 runs for the second wicket. The latter found another willing partner in Kagiso Rapulana, as the pair combined for a 140-run stand to take the Lions past the Rocks’ initial score.
Rickelton went on to raise his bat for a well-deserved century, while Rapulana finished on a commendable 65 off 140 balls (8 fours, 1 six). Rocks all-rounder, Ferisco Adams was the standout bowler for the visitors, taking five wickets for 24 runs to help restrict the Lions.
Trailing by 180 runs at the start of their second innings, the Paarl-based team suffered further setbacks as Olivier emerged out of the changeroom and continued from where he left off in the first innings, nabbing three early wickets to leave the away side with a mountain to climb on 31 / 3 at the close of play.
At the Six Gun Grill Newlands Cricket Ground, the Momentum Multiply Titans’ run-fest continued into day two as Jiveshan Pillay (113* off 186) and all-rounder Ayabulela Gqamane (117* off 143) added a further 199 runs for the eighth wicket to help carry the Titans to a mammoth 647 / 7.
After almost two days of toil in the field, the Six Gun Grill Western Province were guided to 107 / 3 at the end of the day’s play with the help of debutant Daniel Smith (43) and skipper Zubayr Hamza (32*), with 540 runs still needed to match their opponent’s first innings score.
Meanwhile in Potchefstroom, despite starting the day in a comfortable position with 313 / 6 on the scoreboard, the Gbets Warriors lost their remaining four wickets for just 21 runs as Chad Classen (3 – 50) led the charge for the North West Dragons during the morning session to dismiss the Warriors for 334.
In reply, Dragons opener Wesley Marshall (94 off 99 balls; 9 fours, 2 sixes) top-scored for his side after falling short by six runs from a First-Class century, while exciting all-rounder Delano Potgieter contributed with a crucial 74 off 188 balls (11 fours) to take the home team to 317 / 7 and 17 runs behind their opponents.
Mthiwekhaya Nabe (3 – 59) was the pick of the bowlers for his side on the day.
In Durban, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins only managed to add 29 runs to their overnight score before they were skittled out for 226 thanks to efforts from ITEC Knights’ Gerald Coetzee (3 – 65) and Mbulelo Budaza (3 – 42).
With the bat, the Knights looked in imperious form as the side from Bloemfontein only lost one wicket to reach stumps on day two on 168 / 1, trailing by 58 runs, thanks to an impressive 152-run opening partnership between Jacques Snyman (94 off 124 balls; 10 fours, 2 sixes) and Matthew Kleinveldt (63* off 155 balls; 5 fours).
