A monstrous unbeaten 141 from Phil Salt headlined a brutal display from England, as they trounced South Africa and squared the series 1-1.
This was also the first ever occasion when a Full Member team crossed the 300 threshold in T20I cricket, and all the Proteas bowlers received their fair share of punishment today.
This was the third highest innings total in a T20I.
Jos Buttler got the proceedings off to a typical canter, making 83 from only 30 deliveries. Salt was starved of strike during the initial phases, but he would cut loose as soon as Buttler got out.
In spite of a forgettable bowling display, Bjorn Fortuin marked his return to international cricket by taking the only two England wickets today.
It was already known that the target was nearly insurmountable at halftime, and the Proteas openers got cracking rather quickly during the first three overs.
However, the England bowlers took wickets regularly, and the asking rate would soon cross 20 at the halfway mark of the SA innings.
Donovan Ferreira and Bjorn Fortuin briefly entertained, but the whole thing came to a rather tame end when Will Jacks’ part time offspin claimed two wickets in his first over, and Liam Dawson bagged the final wicket, consigning the visitors to a 146 run defeat.
This has been consistent with some of the other recent results, including conceding 400+ against England and then Australia. It will take some regrouping and assessment before gearing up for all the marbles on Sunday.
