Quinton de Kock is the main man in the Proteas batting lineup and has the talent to be better than Brian Lara, writes Alasdair Fraser.

Finally the agonising buildup is done and dusted.

The only thing reinforced in my mind is that Quinton de Kock is our No 1 batsman.

The way he held our innings together was nothing short of exceptional. There was an urgency yet a quiet calmness to his innings.

Coming in at a semi-crisis, you literally blinked and the left-handed master had already passed his fifty.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again; De Kock could be even better than the great Brian Lara.

Such are the unbelievable talents of De Kock you just know there is a massive double century on the horizon.

Yes, the talk of the town is bat him higher. And why not? He opens the ODIs.

But in the current Proteas set-up perhaps No 6 is tailor made – especially with Dwaine Pretorius and Vernon Philander in the mix.

It helps that having a former wicket-keeping great in Mark Boucher at the helm for the next few years. It could see De Kock dropping the gloves and moving up the order.

For now, though, let’s see this current narrative play out.
