Nabeelah Fakier chatted to Shadley van Schalkwyk ahead of the new season in an exclusive Q&A.

At what age did you first start playing cricket, and when did you realise that cricket is the career path you’re going to follow?

I started playing cricket when I was about 5 I think, I always loved playing with my family and friends, just hitting the ball around in the garden. I think I decided on cricket [as a career path] during Matric. I kind of had to make a choice between rugby or cricket because I loved both, and since cricket worked out better with regards to results, it was probably the easier choice.

Who was or is your cricket icon?

I never really had an icon, but a player I enjoyed watching and following was Brian Lara.

What are your thoughts on The Proteas’ Cricket World Cup campaign?

It’s always hard to explain thoughts on the World Cup. It was not what I expected, but I think the boys had a big learning experience from it.

You’ve been with the Knights for 11 years, what has been your most memorable game of your career thus far?

My most memorable game was the season we won the Sunfoil Series [4-Day Franchise Series]. We played the Titans at Supersport Park, they batted first, scored about 300 and bowled us out cheaply for about 200.  We were behind in the game and Merchant de Lange and Duanne Olivier bowled the best spells I have ever seen. We bowled the Titans out in 14 overs, well the two of them did *laughs*. We needed 168 to win, and we stumbled whilst batting, I was lucky enough to get 30 odd not out and Theunis [de Bruyn] got 97 not out and put on a 60-run partnership to win the game.

When you’re not playing cricket, what are you doing?

When I’m not playing cricket, I try to spend as much time with my wife, because we’re always travelling. I try to play some golf (not very good). I enjoy meeting up with close friends, FIFA nights are a must, and I really enjoy the gym and fitness. Otherwise, down time and rest are vital for me.

Who has been the most challenging player you have faced?

The most challenging player or spell of bowling I have faced was Craig Alexander, when he played for the Dolphins. He bowled a spell where the ball was reversing and it seemed like everything just clicked for him, I couldnt get any bat on ball, it was the toughest spell i have faced thus far.

You’re stranded on an island, you’re only allowed 3 things (people included), what would it be?

Wow, ok let’s give this some thought, my initial choice would be my wife Anzel, but it would be so unfair on her *laughs*, but unfortunately for her I am taking her with. 2 would be a surf board and 3 a fishing rod.
