Proteas Women lost their 2nd match of the T20 World Cup by 7 wickets against England.
The Proteas Women never turned up for their 2nd match of the T20 World Cup.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, they posted an under-par 124-6 in their 20 overs.
They had a generally bad performance across all disciplines – batting, bowling and fielding.
With the bat, apart from Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp at the top of the order, and Annerie Dercksen with a quick cameo at the backend of the innings, it was a laboured effort from the Women in Gold.
Wolvaardt scored 42 off 39 balls, Kapp scored 26 off 17 balls and Dercksen hit 20 off 11 as the Proteas posted 124-6.
The rest of the batters struggled to get momentum, with England producing many dot deliveries to restrict South Africa.
Their four spinners were exquisite with their lines and lengths, on top of taking wickets at crucial periods in the match which suffocated the run scoring.
Sophie Ecclestone was England’s best bowler with 2-15.
The England batting approach was calculated. Despite losing 3 wickets, it was staggered enough to not affect their run scoring momentum.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge (43 off 43 balls) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (48 not out off 36 balls) scored the bulk of runs as they completed their chase of 125.
When defending a low total, taking chances in the field becomes crucial. There were too many missed catches and miss-fields by the Proteas Women to claim a victory.
England chased down the total with 4 balls remaining to win by 7 wickets.
