So close, yet so far for the Momentum Proteas as they fell short by 19 runs, but one thing is for certain as the skipper repeatedly said, they have indeed inspired a whole nation. Australia are the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup champions for the sixth time.

As the sun set at Newlands and brought an end to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, it was clear that cricket was the ultimate winner in Cape Town and across the country. It was a win for women’s cricket too, specifically.

When the host side is not victorious, normally fans would start to vacate the stadium but this was not the case as fans wavered and still cheered South Africa on. Some left disheartened but in high spirits.

The general consensus from fans was that this is a historic moment despite the result and that women’s cricket in South Africa is very much alive.

“To play a final in front of a sellout crowd is amazing,” said Sune Luus.

“It’s been absolutely amazing, to play at a home ground with so many watching. Thank you, Newlands and every single supporter. It has been amazing.”

The South African bowlers managed to keep Australia at bay inside the powerplay and got the prized wicket of the dangerous Alyssa Healy early but the Aussies clearly had a plan of action and brought Ashleigh Gardner to the crease instead of the usual Meg Lanning at 3. She struck a couple of lusty blows consecutively as Australia were well set at the halfway mark on 73-1.

Beth Mooney led the way with a brilliant 54-ball unbeaten 74 as Australia posted 156-6 in their 20-over allotment.

Laura Wolvaardt once again came to the fore with her third consecutive half-century but it was in vain as she had little to no help at the other end with the rest of the batters getting starts but not quite pushing on.

SA slumped to 137-6 as the rate kept climbing and Australia’s death bowling showed its worth once more.

“It’s been an incredible tournament to be part of. I live down the road, terrific experience. A tough day. To see the crowd come out was special,” said Wolvaardt.

“Australia are tough to beat. They put up a score and defended it well. We didn’t get off to a good start. There were a couple of no-ball free hits and a lot of cheers. I never experienced something like this.

“I can do this every day, it has been a very cool experience. It’s been amazing as a group, had a good tournament after how we started.” Wolvaard.
