West Indies went into lunch on day 4 on 109-6, as the Proteas gained much ascendency towards the end of the morning spell, which was highlighted by Keshav Maharaj’s historic hat-trick.
Having started the day on 15-0, the West Indians required 309 runs for victory and their quest didn’t get off to the best of starts when Kraigg Brathwaite was dismissed in the day’s third over and the team’s ninth over overall.
Brathwaite played a defensive shot, but a full delivery from Kagiso Rabada to outside off resulted in the West Indian nicking the ball to Dean Elgar at first slip. He walked off for 6 from 17 balls.
Rabada then struck again in the 13th over when an in-swinger seemed to have bamboozled Shai Hope.
Hope half-ducked and went for a half-fend, causing him to get into an unplayable position. He unintentionally hit the ball to Aiden Markram at second slip and departed for 6 from 16 balls.
In the ensuing overs, the Caribbean side began to hit steady boundaries, approximately one every two overs, before Maharaj came into the attack and utilised the turn of the wicket to slow down their attack.
As Maharaj and Anrich Nortje bowled in tandem, West Indies began to take control of their innings with Kieran Powell and Kyle Mayers amassing a solid 64-run partnership from 116 balls.
The curtains came down on their showing, however, when Mayers top-edged a short delivery from Rabada for Elgar to catch after needing to scramble backwards from the slip cordon. Mayers scored 34 from 56 deliveries, including four 4s.
Maharaj had a dream showing in the 37th over when he took a hat-trick, the second of which ever taken by a South African in Test cricket. The first was achieved by Geoff Griffin against England in 1960.
The spinner claimed the wicket of dangerman, Powell, for 51 from 116 balls after the batter swept to deep midwicket for Nortje to take the catch.
Michael Holder then came in and played a defensive shot that edged the ball to short leg for Keegan Petersen to claim.
Maharaj dismissed Joshua Da Silva on his hat-trick ball as the latter edged the ball to Wiaan Mulder at outside leg after playing a conservative shot.
