The rain stopped play on Day 3 of the 2nd Test after Australia declared on 575-8 with the Proteas trailing by 371 with one wicket down in.
Despite two quick well-deserved wickets from Anrich Nortje early on – taking out Travis Head (51) and David Warner (200) – the Proteas struggled to contain Cameron Green (51), Alex Carey (111) and Nathan Lyon (25 off 17).
This saw Australia take a devastating lead. The Proteas had the worst start to their innings losing their skipper for a duck.
Rain then stopped play with an hour left in the day’s play.
